Portraits in Black 00004 From the series Portraits in Black © Marco Ambrosi
Epson print Size 38x38cm Editions of 10 Signed, numbered and dated on the back POR
In his hometown of Verona Marco Ambrosi created a picturesque synthesis of the European and African style by posing black African immigrants from Ghana and Nigeria with a beautiful antique armchair. He sees them as a straightforward and powerful metaphor for the encounter between the two different cultures. These people live and work in Verona and are either newcomers or descendants from families that have lived in Italy for several generations. The compositional style of mysterious and dramatic chiaroscuro subtly references Italian Baroque painting while the repeated backdrop and prop relates to the studio style of West African photographer Seydou Keita. The refined simplicity of the portraits gives deep meaning to these studies of individuals and their sense of identity, personal values and certainty or uncertainty of his or her choices.
