NEWS - 20.03.2013

Lee Karen Stow joined the site in 2012. Based in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, Lee will contribute both botanical work from her home area of Yorkshire such as the series ‘Closer’ and 'The Beech Tree’ produced during periods of respite away from her documentary work for which she received an Honorary Degree, Doctor of Letters from the University of Hull in 2012. The Sierra Leone documentary work is shot in Freetown which is twinned with her home town of Hull and has been seen widely both in the UK and abroad, accompanied by her lectures on the subject of women’s issues within the area, and workshops. Both botanical series are a deliberate departure from the intensity of the documentary and are currently scheduled to show in various galleries around Yorkshire. This month sees the start of a new body of work entitled ‘Poppies’ in preparation for show in 2014 at Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge for the WWI Centenary celebrations. The work combines elements of both genre for the first time and for Lee, marks further development as a photographic artist. A local angle to 'Poppies', entitled ‘I Remember’, inspired by Iris Newbould who served as a Land Army Girl during WWII, and sponsored by the James Reckitt Library Trust will also be shown at Hull Libraries throughout 2014.
